How To Choose The Right Flow Meter For Your Application

Jun 03, 2026 Leave a message

In the previous two chapters, we discussed the fundamental difference between volumetric flow rate and mass flow rate. Volumetric flow rate is generally chosen for stable operating conditions, while mass flow rate is a better choice for complex conditions.

However, in industrial automation, water treatment, energy management, and equipment manufacturing, flow measurement is a crucial part of process control. Yet, many users focus only on the diameter and price when purchasing flow meters, neglecting key factors such as media characteristics, installation conditions, and measurement objectives.

Industrial Flow Meter Selection Avoid Costly Measurement Errors

In fact, even the most expensive flow meter will not provide reliable data if the wrong one is selected.

So let's look at how to choose the right flow meter for your specific operating conditions.

Step 1 : Define the Measurement Medium

Different media determine different measurement principles. They are mainly divided into two categories: liquids and gases. Today, we'll discuss liquid media first.

Liquid Media

Liquids are mainly classified into two categories: conductive and viscous.

Conductive Liquids (Water, Sewage, Acids and Alkalis)

For tap water, industrial circulating water, sewage, and corrosive chemical solutions, electromagnetic flowmeters (HNF60) are the preferred choice. They have no pressure loss, no moving parts, strong corrosion resistance, and stable measurement, making them the most cost-effective solution for long-term monitoring of conductive liquids. However, electromagnetic flowmeters strictly require the medium to be conductive and cannot measure oil or pure water.

Viscous Liquids are further divided into:

Low-viscosity clean liquids (Diesel, Gasoline, Pure Water)

For clean, impurity-free oil and pure water media, turbine flowmeters (HNF20-A/B/C) perform best. They offer fast response and high accuracy, making them ideal for precise liquid transport and accurate metering of small flow rates.

High-viscosity liquids (Crude Oil, Lubricating Oil, Syrup)

Viscous media are not suitable for velocity flowmeters. Positive displacement flowmeters, such as gear flowmeters (HNF30), are a better choice. These devices rely on mechanical cavity volume division for measurement, are unaffected by viscosity, and provide extremely stable data.

Step 2 : Determine the Measurement Target

Not all applications require the same data.

1. Flow Monitoring Only

Used for judging equipment operating status or simple statistics.

Recommended:

* Turbine Flow Meter HNF20-A/B/C

* Ultrasonic Flow Meter HNF00-B/C

2. High-Precision Measurement Required

Used for trade settlement, energy consumption analysis, or mass flow data.

* Coriolis Mass Flow Meter (HNF90)

Step 3 : Consider Installation Conditions

The on-site installation environment often determines the ultimate success of the application.

1. Inability to Shut Down and Cut Pipes

Many older factories or existing systems cannot be shut down for installation.

Recommended:

Clamp-on Ultrasonic Flow Meter (HNF00/100 Series)

Installation can be completed without cutting pipes, drilling holes, or stopping production.

2. Limited Pipe Space

Recommendation: * Split-type flow meter, separating the detection component and display screen to maximize space utilization.

* Compact flow meter

Based on the information above, we can conclude:

1. Water and conductive/corrosive liquids → Electromagnetic flow meter

2. Clean, low-viscosity oils and pure liquids → Turbine flow meter

3. High-viscosity liquids → Oval gear positive displacement flow meter

4. Non-destructive installation and pipeline modification → Ultrasonic flow meter

There is no "best" flow meter, only the "most suitable".

Correct selection requires comprehensive consideration of multiple factors such as media type, flow range, installation conditions, accuracy requirements, and budget.

Appropriate selection at the beginning of a project not only improves measurement accuracy but also reduces later maintenance costs and downtime risks.

If you are unsure which flow meter is suitable for your application, simply provide the media, pipe diameter, flow range, and site photos, and we will provide you with a suitable solution!
