High Viscosity Performance
They are exceptional at measuring highly viscous liquids (like oils, sealants, and greases) where traditional velocity meters struggle.
Accuracy & Repeatability
Provides highly precise measurements, often boasting reading accuracies of up to \(\pm 0.2\%\) to \(\pm 0.5\%\), regardless of temperature or viscosity shifts.
No Straight Pipe Runs Required
Unlike turbine meters, gear flow meters do not require upstream or downstream straight pipe runs. They can be installed immediately after valves, bends, or pumps.
High Turndown Ratio
They accommodate a very wide range of flow rates, providing excellent measurement capabilities from low to high capacities.
Oval Gear Flow Meters
Features two intermeshing oval or lobed gears. Fluid enters and pushes the gears, trapping a precise, fixed volume of liquid in the gaps between the gear teeth and the meter housing.
Helical Gear Flow Meters
Uses rotors shaped like a continuous, twisted screw (helical thread) instead of standard flat gear teeth. Fluid flows smoothly and continuously through the teeth, preventing pulsation and reducing pressure drops.
Spur Gear Flow Meters
Utilizes two standard round intermeshing spur gears. As the fluid passes, it causes the gears to spin at a rotational speed directly proportional to the flow rate.
Screw Gear Flow Meters
Functions similarly to helical meters but typically employs two overlapping, non-contacting, screw-shaped rotors. The screws create a closed measuring chamber to transport the fluid from inlet to outlet.
Applications
Chemistry
Gear-type flow meters are commonly used to measure the flow rate, volume, or total flow of chemicals in batching applications. Batch controllers, when used with gear-type flow meters, can automatically dispense preset chemical volumes. Measurement data can be sent to a computer or PLC for logging.
Energy
Another common industrial application is measuring the net fuel consumption of engines and boilers. By installing one gear-type flow meter in the supply line and another in the return line, the total net fuel consumption of the engine or boiler can be accurately determined.
Hydraulics
Gear-type flow meters ensure adequate lubricant distribution during bearing lubrication. Furthermore, oval gear flow meters can be used by controllers to automatically shut down machines if insufficient or no flow occurs.
Pulp and Paper
Commonly used with paper finishing chemicals to ensure ideal delivery rates and accurately record the amount of chemical dispensed. They can measure the distribution of wax finishes, fragrances, and sizing chemicals sprayed on paper.
