How does a Coriolis mass flowmeter work?

HNF90 Coriolis mass flowmeter

 

Drive coil vibrates tubes at resonant frequency. Flow induces Coriolis force – tubes twist. Inlet/outlet twist direction opposite. Phase difference (Δt) proportional to mass flow. Tube vibration frequency = density. Temperature measured via RTD. Three variables from one sensor.

Installation and Selection Key Points

 

  1. Zero calibration required after installation (no flow, tubes full)
  2. Upstream/downstream straight pipe not critical – Coriolis meter has no velocity profile sensitivity
  3. Avoid external vibration near sensor – can affect zero stability
  4. For gas applications: select appropriate tube size to keep velocity above minimum detectable range

Measurement Principle

Based on the Coriolis Effect. When fluid flows through the vibrating measurement tube, a phase difference proportional to the mass flow rate is generated. The sensor detects changes in vibration frequency, phase difference, and amplitude, directly calculates the mass flow rate, and determines the fluid density through synchronous vibration frequency.
